2017 will be the third time Beyond the Barriers has been a part of Equidays and the team is looking forward to this year's competition.

An initiative created to showcase the versatility of Thoroughbreds, Beyond the Barriers features many horses pursuing new careers as sport or pleasure horses. Many of these have had a previous life as a racehorse and are being retrained into a new discipline. The competition itself is known as the Dunstan Ex-Factor, in a nod to the ex-racehorses that take part and the aim to heighten awareness around Thoroughbreds as more than racehorses.

There is one compulsory class for all combinations, the Best Presented and Conditioned Class, while riders may then choose up to three other classes from the following list: Dressage, Show Jumping, Equitation, Derby, Off-Road Challenge, Freestyle, and Paced & Mannered.

Riders apply for the competition through Equestrian Entries, with the only rule being that the horse may not have had any sport horse schooling prior to 1 November 2016. A selection process takes place before those chosen will present their horses at Equidays in October.
